Supporting mind-body well-being
Mindfulness for mental health, addiction recovery and greater well-being.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment with curiosity and without judgment. It allows us to meet each moment with presence and acceptance. Mindfulness helps us become more aware of our experiences, including our thoughts, feelings, and sensations, so we can better manage them instead of being overwhelmed by them. In addition, mindfulness helps us cultivate greater self-compassion, self-acceptance, and resilience.
Benefits of mindfulness
A large body of research proves the many benefits of mindfulness:
Improved focus and concentration
Increased happiness and well-being
Decreased stress, anxiety and depression
Improved mental and emotional health
Nervous system regulation
Better sleep, improved immune functioning and pain management
Mindfulness-based interventions
In clinical settings, mindfulness sessions are incorporated into the treatment plan to support recovery. Clinical sessions include guided mindfulness meditations, mindfulness exercises, and gentle movements. The group leader provides a safe, therapeutic space for clients to explore thoughts, feelings, and sensations in a mindful, compassionate way to promote greater self-awareness, resilience and compassion.
Mindfulness Modalities
Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness meditation focuses on present-moment awareness, a moment-to-moment practice that focuses on rooting ourselves in our bodies in the here and now. By observing our thoughts, feelings, and sensations as they arise in the moment, with loving awareness and without judgment, we can slow down the busy mind and become centered and grounded in our being.
Mindful Movement & Yoga
Mindful movement connects mind and body using traditional yoga postures and conscious breathing to create greater self and body awareness and helps release both mental and physical tension. Mindful movement lowers stress and anxiety and helps us ground into the present moment.
Mindfulness for Mental Health
Clinical research demonstrates the positive impact of mindfulness techniques on several mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Mindfulness helps with managing the symptoms of a mental health disorder by becoming aware of stressors, triggers, and negative thoughts and by utilizing techniques to remain centered and in control during difficult and stressful moments. Mindfulness sessions provide practical tools to support recovery and create long-term, sustainable change.
Mindfulness for Addiction Recovery
Evidence shows that mindfulness can be an effective component of an integrated drug and alcohol addiction treatment plan. Mindfulness helps with allowing one to recognize stressors that lead to cravings and can aid in relapse prevention. It also helps clients learn to be attentive and aware of the present rather than focus on past problems contributing to substance use. Mindfulness offers practical coping tools for stress management and long-term sobriety.
